JOHN KIELTY, HEAD MARTIAN and overlord. Be Afraid........
I have LOTS of info and pics on JOhn! He's an engaging and fun performer. I first met him over 5 years ago (where does TIME go!) in April 2003 (more below).
JOHN is the driving force, the frontman, the BIG BROTHER ...... He often writes songs with younger brother Gerry and also with brother James Kielty.
He has acted in lots of plays - on stage, radio and TV - sometimes in the lead roles. John and David Sneddon started the Martians in 2001. John joined David (winner of BBCs first Fame Academy) in London in 2003 to write and perform with his band, and he co-wrote David’s debut album which charted at #5,
John was on Top of the Pops several times with David’s band. They played Uni gigs and also supported Elton John & Bryan Adams.
All this while John was making his plans for the Martians....and busy busy writing songs and scripts. His lyrics are clever and memorable.
John plays piano and guitar. He learned his music in 6th year at school. He hails from Clydebank near Glasgow and moved to Edinburgh town 2001 (I think) where he shares a flat with Gerry. John has an American girlfriend and spends much of his time near San Francisco. He is passionate about Sci-fi, Doctor Who, his music and his dreams for the MARTIANS band. John is fascinated by the undead, and 'thin places' - re his 'CITY OF THE DEAD' ghost tours. His writing is greatly influenced by sci-fi stories. A huge Dr Who & sci-fi fan, John has ambitions to one day play the Doctor. He is tailor made for Dr Who's colourful scarves, long coats and surprised expressions!
John kindly gave me an interview for the site in October 2005 and talked about how the band started, his plans and his music. I was impressed.
JOHN'S MUSICALS ; He began writing 'Martians scripts' for radio and they became musicals. John's musical titles are: 'The Rise of the Martians!' 'Beneath the Stars!' (about a girl who falls for a popstar) and his favourite ‘The Sundowe’ a medi-evil War of the Worlds!'
2008 - John did a UK tour with the reduced Shakespeare company in ‘The complete Word of God’ In 2009 his musical 'Mercy Madonna of Malaw' played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival .
Accomplished actor, versatile musician, gifted singer songwriter, prolific writer and genuine down-to-earth guy.
Revise that - often out in outer space! Actor, One Life Stand; Writer of Musicals; Co-Composer, David Sneddon 'Seven Years Ten Weeks.'
‘mostly I just like to get people nodding.’ (Bio (C) Pauline Keightley)

JOHN TALKED ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR HIS MARTIANS BAND - OCT 2005 Oran Mor
‘We’d like to be like the Monkees, but more real, do comedy sketches and perform songs.
‘I’m interested in musical theatre, the performance and engaging people from the stage.’

I first met John Kielty at David Sneddon's Safeways signing in April 2003 for his debut album 'Seven Years Ten Weeks', which John co-wrote. He was standing leaning against a table, and I got the impression he was close to David. I asked him to sign an album for me. Little did I know I'd be here doing a site for him 5 years later!
I met him again a year later backstage at the charity gig Reaching For Africa, at the Armadillo Glasgow in May 2004, where he performed as a duo with David. John had written a song 'Only A Boy' which David wrote a perfect piano melody for. They performed with rock band The Sham in 2004, and I was always struck with John's enthusiasm, energy and FUN on stage. We heard many fun reports from those going to Martians shows in 2004 ( posted on the site) John was great at keeping in touch.
We had started a site for the band, the shamfansite, and had so much on John that we decided to start the Martiansfansite early in 2005. In 2006, before John went to live near San Francisco, he and David performed acoustic gigs. They continued writing songs together and David said they had a special music rapport. I later (in 2007) saw John leaning again, against his 'City of the Dead' tour sign. He takes unsuspecting tourists to the haunted Covenanters grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard.....
